Young Vic Theatre, London

As good as new…

Following a two-year refurbishment programme, the Young Vic Theatre in London has reopened. Under the architectural command of Haworth Tompkins, the re-design of the façade, deploying anodised aluminium expanded metal, was executed by façade constructor James & Taylor in collaboration with SORST Streckmetall and the Expanded Metal Company. Through the application of a 200 mesh with a wide strand width, the texture of the façade could be significantly accentuated. This façade creates a unique transformation of the façade appearance between day and night. In the evening, the appearance is dominated by the yellow coating which, supported by strong lighting, gives the impression of a rising theatre curtain. By daylight the façade transmits a feeling of movement.

This façade, created by James & Taylor and the Expanded Metal Company, aroused great interest worldwide,

causing the foremost designer of the „New Museum of Contemporary Art” in New York, Sanaa, to voice his praise accordingly.
