Who would have thought that…
On the idyllic bank of the Danube canal, in the Simmering heathland on the outskirts of Vienna, stands Europe’s most modern waste incineration plant, built in 2006. The Viennese architects Veselinovic – Resetarits were able to obtain the tender with their concept. The silhouette of the orange expanded metal cladding brings the interior into form, does not obscure and provides a compact appearance. The combination of light and shadow, colours and forms transforms the apparent lightness of the shell into an experience of diversity. Depending on the light incidence, the appearance of the expanded metal surface varies from glossy and glowing to strong and expressive orange. During the day the façade has a somewhat discreet appearance, in accordance with an industrial structure, but at night the adroit deployment of lighting elements lends the building an almost futuristic air. For this application, SORST expanded metal plates from galvanised steel with a 212 mesh length and orange powder coating were employed.
