Corten in Top Form
Marylebone High Street, London For the renovation of the school, which lies within a conservation area in London, Philip Gumuchdijan and his team of architects were commissioned to construct new classroom buildings. In order to obtain a high degree of translucence, the architects, assisted by our English subsidiary, the Expanded Metal Company, devised an expanded metal façade from Corten steel. The red colour of the cladding and screening on the art and music buildings is reminiscent of the rich colouring of a brick building from the 19th Century. Several prototypes were evaluated before the decision was reached to deploy an elongated hexagonal mesh made from 3mm thick Corten steel.
